Post Adoption Support for Adoptive Parents

Wednesday 13 November 2024

We understand that while adoption is rewarding, like any other parenting journey, it can also be challenging.  Adoption Tees Valley have a dedicated Post Adoption Support Team with a wealth of experience to support you during and beyond your adoption journey.

Our team offers a range of support services to families throughout their adoption journey and beyond using a tiered approach, which has been designed to offer the right level of support at the time our families need it.

The support we offer ranges from picking up the phone for an informal chat right through to therapeutic support services. If at any point you need further support access outside of what Adoption Tees Valley offer we will manage your application to the Adoption Support Fund (ASF).

As part of our support services we also have a dedicated Education Support Worker who specifically focuses on supporting adopted children and their families with key transitions, to access education support services and assisting schools in meeting the needs of these children, including pupil premium plus.

Collaboration with Adoption Support Agencies

We collaborate with various adoption support agencies to provide a holistic approach to post-adoption support. These partnerships enable us to offer a wide range of resources and services, ensuring that every family receives the support they need.

What is the post adoption period?

The post adoption period means the period after which you have been approved as an adopter and have a child or children placed with you.

Post adoption support can come in many forms, at Adoption Tees Valley we offer a tiered post adoption support service. Our tiered support ranges from informal support groups, family fun days through to therapeutic intervention. This means we have the right level of support for you at the right time. Why do adoptees struggle?

All adopted children have experienced loss when they have been separated from their birth family. They may struggle with feelings of trauma, identity issues, feelings of rejection, and more, all of which can take a toll on their mental health.

Why is post adoption support needed?

During the post adoption period it is not unusual for families to need some support, like any parenting journey, adoption can come with challenges and for adopted young people there are extra layers of support they may need to help them. If families are struggling, we encourage them to come and talk to us, there is no shame in needing help and we will assess families to find the right support for them. Sometimes this may involve a referral to the Adoption Support Fund.

What is the adoption support fund?

The adoption support fund (ASF) is a dedicated fund that regional adoption agencies (RAAs) use to pay for essential therapeutic services for eligible adoptive families. Following an assessment by adoption social worker in the post adoption team Adoption Tees Valley can apply for therapeutic funding from the Adoption Support Fund. Every adopted child is entitled to £2,500 per child per year for specialist assessment and £5,000 per child per year for therapy. Find out more about the adoption support fund here
